About the intestine and the microflora

About the gut

The gut is the border between the outside and the inside of the body and also the body's most important area for contact and exchange. The well-being and balance of the gut is crucial for our health and growth.

Facts about the intestine

  • About 9 meters long.
  • We produce about 75 kg of faeces per year and 6 tons in a lifetime, half of which is made up of bacteria.
  • The gut has an area of approx. 400 m2. which corresponds to a tennis court.
  • We have 100,000 billion bacteria in the gut, which is 10 times more than the total number of cells in the entire body.
  • Approximately 70% of the body's immune cells/defense are in the intestine.
  • 100 million nerves are in the intestine.

About the microflora

  • A total of 100,000 billion bacteria from 1,000 different species, all with their specific function.
  • Each individual has a unique intestinal flora, a genetic ID card.

Different types of bacteria

  • Resident bacteria – the own colonized intestinal flora, unique to each individual.
  • Passing bacteria - supplied to the body through food or dietary supplements. These do not colonize in the intestine, but function partly as help for the resident bacteria, partly through their own strain-specific properties during the short time of 2-20 days that they live and act in the intestine.
  • Diversity is very important to maintain balance.

The important balance

The microflora is a complex ecosystem and is responsible for for example digestion and the body's immune system.

Many factors affect this balance

  • Changed or poor dietary habits
  • Stress
  • Aging
  • Antibiotics
  • Intake of disease-causing agents bacteria

An upset balance can cause a number of different problems.

The importance of eating lactic acid bacteria

Poor diet and a lifestyle with high stress expose the intestinal flora to great challenges. It is known today that the species richness and amount of bacteria in the intestinal flora is affected by how we live and what we eat, and that the greater the species richness of the intestinal flora, the better resistance we have to disease and imbalance.
