Common questions and answers

Here you will find frequently asked questions and answers about LactiPlus™

What time of day should you take lactic acid bacteria?

The best time of day to ingest lactic acid bacteria is in the morning when the stomach's pH value is higher than later in the day when we have eaten and the stomach acid has lowered the pH value, which makes the environment in the stomach tougher for the lactic acid bacteria.

What does the capsule material consist of?

All capsules in the LactiPlus range are made from HPMC - hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, a vegan alternative to gelatin.

Where do lactic acid bacteria come from?

Lactic acid bacteria can be isolated from fermented food, vegetables or from humans. These cannot colonize our gut permanently, studies show that regardless of origin, lactic acid bacteria stick to the gut for a short time, generally between 2-20 days.

What should you know before choosing a lactic acid bacteria supplement?

Since different strains of lactic acid bacteria have different properties, it is important to know that the strain is characterized correctly. You know this by the fact that the tribe is named with genus, species and tribe name. A good product with lactic acid bacteria must always contain well-identified and documented strains, be safe for the user, contain live bacteria, clear storage conditions, remain alive in the intestine and be able to withstand stomach acid and bile salts.

What are lactic acid bacteria?

Lactic acid bacteria, for example Lactobacillus, are a type of probiotic that produces lactic acid in the gut. Other examples of probiotics are Bifidobacterium, which produces organic acids such as butyrate (butyric acid) in the gut. There are also probiotic yeasts such as Saccharomyces Boulardii. Despite the fact that the name lactic acid bacteria is not really correct, as not all strains that are called lactic acid bacteria do not produce lactic acid, the regulations in Sweden do not allow the name probiotics on food packaging, therefore probiotic products are labeled with Lactic acid bacteria.

Can lactic acid bacteria be ingested during pregnancy?

Ingestion of lactic acid bacteria (probiotics) during pregnancy and breastfeeding is considered safe for healthy women and, by extension, also for the child. There have been no published reports from clinical studies on pregnant women and newborns that the consumption of probiotics causes negative health effects.

Can lactic acid bacteria be ingested by children?

Ingestion of lactic acid bacteria (probiotics) is considered safe for children and can be taken with the same precautions as for adults.

Can I open the capsules and sprinkle the contents on my food?

Yes, all the capsules in our LactiPlus products can be pulled apart and sprinkled over cold food or drink, for example in your yogurt or filet in the morning. All strains are specifically selected and have the ability to withstand the tough environment in the stomach and reach the intestine alive.

How do multi-strain products differ from single-strain products?

The intestinal flora has a very complex ecosystem and contains more than 1,000 different bacterial species. Different bacteria thrive and attach to different parts of the intestinal tract depending on the pH value and oxygen content. A single strain does not thrive in all areas of the gut. Therefore, a product with several different strains also has more properties and attaches to a larger part of the intestinal mucosa than a single strain.

How should lactic acid bacteria be stored?

It is always better to store your lactic acid bacteria cool, dry and not above normal room temperature. You can also advantageously store the bacteria in the refrigerator. Lactic acid bacteria should not be exposed to extreme temperatures above 30°C or strong humidity for a long time, as this will dramatically affect their survival.

How are the freeze-dried bacteria regenerated in the gastrointestinal tract?

The lactic acid bacteria are freeze-dried and thus inactive in order to survive for a long time in the capsule/packaging. In the intestine, however, they find all the moisture and nutrition they need to regain their activity.

Do lactic acid bacteria have any side effects and are there people who should not take these?

Lactic acid bacteria have shown no side effects in studies, even in doses of hundreds of billions per day and are considered safe to take although a few individuals experienced a temporary increase in gas formation at first. However, the principle of caution also applies here, people who have recently had surgery, have bloody diarrhea or have a severe form of weakened immune system should only take lactic acid bacteria on the advice of a doctor.

Should I take LactiPlus in connection with antibiotic treatment?

Treatment with antibiotics aims to eliminate the bacteria that are the cause of the disease or problems, but it also affects our good bacteria in the intestinal flora. The effect is that harmful bacteria take up space in the intestine, which can cause discomfort and imbalance. It can be good to top up with lactic acid bacteria after the antibiotic course has ended to contribute to the balance and diversity of the intestinal flora.

Do all lactic acid bacteria have the same properties?

No, the properties are strain specific. Two strains of, for example, Lactobacillus rhamnosus can have different properties, therefore it is important to know which strain is included in the product and what documentation that strain has. Lactobacillus is the genus and rhamnosus is the species, but the specific designation is given to the strain by those who discovered it or by the owner of the strain. For example: Lallemand Health Solutions strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus Rosell-11.
